Traitor tracing algorithms employed by the content provider allow to trace back content piracy to the source, thus discouraging redistribution of decryption keys and decrypted content. Due to recent advances, e.g. Tardos codes, and research results on cryptographic primitives, e.g. indistinguishability obfuscation, technological barriers are reduced and we might see more of these systems employed. We simply review the state-of-the-art in traitor tracing algorithms, and highlight their capabilities and limitations in plain language.
