The recent growth in autonomous systems brings challenges to our society. Autonomous vehicles in particular bring challenges to road authorities in playing their role in initial road allowance. Hence, in this article we will look further into the desirability and the possibilities of in-car artificial intelligence to support the automated vehicle in becoming a safe road user. Meaningful human control is required in order to rightly assign social responsibility for automated vehicles. Providing the automated vehicle with the proper law-based driving software should be based on that principle. Previous work on relevant normative systems could help to accelerate this research.
